Nice Saison - Drinking Notes

Besides Wisconsin, Colorado is probably the second state in terms of beer-making (no, Missouri doesn't make beer). This drinking note comes from Tommyknocker Brewery in Idaho Springs, Colorado.

Tommyknocker Nice Saison Seasonal Ale
Drinking Notes Series

This beer is Tommyknocker's Seasonal Ale, available from April to July. It pours out a hazy golden color with a small head that reduces quickly to nothing as it releases its carbonation. Upfront this ale is sour, almost a vinegary lemon, then some fennel spice with an herby hoppy finish that lasts. The most pronounced flavor and aroma is citrus. Obviously designed for spring and summer picnics, the Nice Saison will not be everyone's favorite due to the sour sting it punches without much else going on with it, however it's not gut-rot hard lemonade either.

Potential cocktail compliments: Since a number of other reviewers of this ale also think that it is too sour for a saison (our beer palates are still in their relative infancy). Rather they think it tastes more like a Berliner Wheat without the wheat, so maybe the Berliner Weiss mit Schuss (Berlin Wheat and shot) would work interestingly here: add 16 ounces of Tommyknocker Nice Saison into 1 ounce of raspberry syrup. Enjoy.
