Essential Liquor #15

#15) Southern Comfort - I cannot remember a summer in the 2000s where we didn't drink a bottle of Southern Comfort. This is one of my dad's liquors, a simple change of pace from his customary supper club Brandy Old Fashioned Sweet. Simply remove the brandy and insert SoCo - voila... the Southern Comfort Old Fashioned.

For our recipe this week, I combined the SoCo Old Fashioned with a mix celebrated in Dr. Cocktail's Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails recipe book (our new favorite recipe book). The mix is called Jasper's Secret Mix and it consists of the juice of 12 limes, 1 1/2 cups of sugar, 1 1/4 ounces of Angostura Bitters, and 1/2 a nutmeg, grated. Over the weekend with Melanie, Aaron, and Tonia, we explored this fine sour for a few creations. Try this one...

Blind Corridor

2 1/2 ounces Southern Comfort
1/2 ounce of Triple Sec
3 ounces of Jasper's Secret Mix

Shake, strain, and enjoy on a hot day. If it is too sour, reduce the Jasper's.

  1. Holy crap this is yummy! I cheated a bit not wanting to mix up a ton of Jasper's mix. Instead I used 2 1/2 oz simple syrup (which I already had made) and 1/2 oz Stirring's clarified key lime juice. Then I threw in a dash of bitters, the Soco, triple sec, and grated some nutmeg into the shaker.
