Essential Liquor #23

#23) Apple Brandy or Calvados - If you would have asked us to concoct this list just a year ago, apple brandy wouldn't have come close to make the cut. I had just an ancient bottle of Calvados (dry apple brandy) that was seven-eighths full, because no one would drink it. Then, we got on a 1920s kick and the Calvados has only a couple ounces remaining!

Most Calvados is a hair dry for the ladies, so I'd recommend a nice bottle of Applejack. Laird's is king and very affordable. Either can be used in the classic cocktails because apple brandy drinks usually combine at least 2 liquors.

One of those classic drinks that combine three liquors is the great-tasting Honeymoon. The original calls for Calvados but I used Applejack for this one. I have had and like both. Cindy seems to like the Calvados one better, so my dry liquor lovers - this one is for you.

Honeymoon

2 ounces Calvados (or Applejack)
1/2 ounce Benedictine
1/2 ounce Triple Sec
1/2 ounce fresh squeezed lemon juice

Shake and enjoy.

  1. Didn't have the Calvados handy, but like you I had this bottle of Apple Jack which I've probably had for 10 years. Yummy drink. I think it captures the essence of an Ol' Fashioned which is probably why this Wisconsinite and others enjoy it!

  2. True. A bit of Angostura would channel Wisconsin even more.
